A new chapter in Library provision…
Changes to East Ayrshire’s Library Service in Kilmaurs.
Public libraries are much-loved, welcoming, free, safe and politically neutral spaces where people can explore and share reading, information, knowledge and culture. However, usage of libraries is declining nationally as more people access their books and information using alternative methods, for example, buying books cheaply online and accessing e-books.
Currently in East Ayrshire 14% of the population are ‘active borrowers’ from libraries. We value all of our customers and strive to ensure that Library provision in your area continues to meet your needs. The core purpose of libraries is, and will remain, enabling people to access, explore and enjoy books, reading and developing knowledge.
The ‘Library Offer’
The future of our provision across East Ayrshire will cover four strands reflecting the National picture of what a 21st century library service should offer:
1. Books/Reading - a lively and engaging book/reading offer providing a modern service in communities
2. Information – a focus on supporting people to access information and services online in areas such as careers and job seeking; health; personal financial information and benefits
3. Digital - including free internet access, online library facilities such as 24hr access to the catalogue and access to a range of IT learning opportunities
4. Health – a contribution to the health and wellbeing of local communities
In East Ayrshire we will:
Ensure a wide range of books and reading material is available to meet the needs of all ages, abilities and interests
Ensure libraries continue to offer a wide range of book and reading-related activities to promote and support literacy and social improvement
Develop a range of digital services
Ensure libraries continue to provide information to encourage health and wellbeing
Ensure our children and young people have access to the full range of resources they need to achieve their maximum potential
Support learning at all stages
Continue to offer a range of family learning events
Ensure libraries continue to provide information to support family life
Provide free wi-fi in libraries
Offer a range of IT taster sessions and accredited programmes to determine future course provision, including development of courses to assist users in use of devices such as tablets
Widen access to the range of digital resources available
Future developments also include an e-books facility and a Housebound service, where a library van will be used to deliver books to people with mobility problems or community groups who do not have access to a Community Library or the Mobile Library service. The creation of community led ‘bookpoints’ will also be developed, subject to local community interest.
