Conservation Taster Weekends

Fancy helping behind the scenes conserving the countryside for wildlife, learning new skills and making new friends?

From autumn 2017, Dean Castle Country Park will be offering exciting practical conservation holidays to suit every interest and ability. After a day out and about in the fresh air, enjoy a well-earned rest in our brand new Treehouse Residential Centre. Try your hand at willow weaving on a living maze, have a campfire, go rhodie bashing or help us maintain the paths in the beautiful Ayrshire countryside.

If you love nature, getting outdoors, and giving new things a try, then why not have a go. You could make a real difference to Ayrshire’s wildlife and have a great time doing it.

For a weekend with a difference, try an all-inclusive conservation short break on 13-15 October & 3-5 November at an exclusive taster cost of £40 for a whole weekend.

13-15 October: Coppicing & Coppice Crafts

Have a go at coppicing this October. This traditional woodland management skill allows light to reach the woodland floor creating a more varied habitat and canopy in the woodland. We’ll also try some coppice crafts, shaping the coppicing sticks for use in hedge-laying and hurdle-making.

3-5 November: Hedge-Laying

Try your hand at the traditional rural skill of hedge-laying and learn your pleachers from your billhooks! Laid hedges are stock-proof, provide ideal shelter for wildlife and look fantastic too. We’ll learn to safely lay the hedge, fix it with hazel sticks and bind the top with willow rods.
