2016 West District Championships

Kilmarnock’s Ayrshire Athletics Arena once again provided the perfect setting for the Scottish Athletics West District Track and Field Championships marking the opening of the 2016 competitive athletics season.

Hundreds of athletes pulled on their spikes to compete in a full programme of track and field events for youths and adults on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th May. Members of local club, the Kilmarnock Harriers, put in excellent performances with Kudzai Tapatapa, Fraser Angus, Jamie Nix, Bethany Ross, Hannah Burn, Evie Bartl, Sara Barbour, Finlay Walker, Laura Carruthers and Emily O’Shea all gaining places on the medal table.

Ayrshire’s Rachel Hunter, who regularly trains at the Arena, made a welcome return to the hammer event after shoulder surgery and went on to win the Seniors Gold with a distance of 58.78m.  A full list of results from all the events can be found at www.scottishathletics.org.uk

Chair of East Ayrshire Leisure and Leader of East Ayrshire Council, Councillor Douglas Reid alongside Provost Jim Todd and East Ayrshire Leisure Trustees, Councillors Eoghann MacColl and Hugh Ross attended the event to support the local athletes and assist with medal presentations.
