Another Kilmarnock Venue Gains a 4 Star Award
Kilmarnock’s Palace Theatre has scored very highly from the national tourism organisation, winning the venue a Four Star Arts Venue Quality Assurance award.
In recognition of the warm and welcoming staff, high quality and eye catching new signage and refurbished toilet facilities on the ground floor, The Palace Theatre was awarded the VisitScotland grading following a recent assessment visit by a Quality Tourism Advisor.
Councillor Douglas Reid, Chair of East Ayrshire Leisure and Leader of East Ayrshire Council said: “We are delighted that the Palace Theatre has been graded as a 4 star arts venue. There has been a range of improvements made to the theatre and with a varied programme of shows and music, combined with the excellent customer service provided by staff, we can proudly say that we are one of the best arts venues in the region”
The site of the Palace Theatre was once part of a public bleaching green, hence the street name 'Green Street', and the site was subsequently a fish market before the decision was made to build a Corn Exchange in 1863. The building was converted to a theatre in 1903 and is now home to a 500 seat theatre, 900 seat concert hall, exhibition rooms and art halls. The Theatre and adjoining Grand Hall have welcomed a host of leading stars of their day including Val Doonican, Chic Murray and Rikki Fulton to Billy Connolly, Kevin Bridges, Calvin Harris, The View, Paul Heaton, Primal Scream and Johnny Marr in more recent times.
The A-Listed building is one of James Ingram's finest designs in Kilmarnock and is one of the town’s most iconic landmarks. The Palace Theatre underwent external refurbishment in 2011/2012 and an LED lighting system was installed highlighting some of the beautiful features of the building’s architecture ensuring that this iconic building can be admired day or night.
The Palace Theatre is the latest attraction in East Ayrshire Leisure’s portfolio of attractions to be awarded 4 stars from VisitScotland.
VisitScotland Regional Director Annique Armstrong said:
“From comedy to children’s shows, drama to dance, and magic to musicals, The Palace Theatre always offers a great night out and a varied year-long programme of excellent entertainment to suit all tastes. I’m delighted that this wonderful, highly popular attraction has been awarded our 4-Star grading in recognition of its excellent standards, and my congratulations go to the team at the theatre on such a well-deserved achievement.
“The 4-Star award is a trusted, impartial assurance of quality so it’s a great marketing tool and important asset - not only for The Palace and Kilmarnock but for East Ayrshire; it further enhances our ability to promote the area as a destination which offers a diverse range of fantastic things to see and do, supporting tourism and the region’s economy.”
