Badminton Programme Benefits from Special Visitors
The East Ayrshire Leisure badminton programme at Mauchline Games Hall has been bolstered in the past few months by the attendance of local Scottish international players Adam Hall and Holly Newall.
Adam and Holly attended the East Ayrshire Leisure afterschool sessions when they were around six years old. They were both highly competitive and, during their primary school years, they achieved similar notable milestones: both won the Mauchline Primary Championship (no mean feat at that time), Under-11 National Titles in singles and doubles, and county titles. They also took part in Mauchline Primary School teams, frequent winners of the Scottish Primary Schools Quaich, and both continued their success at the county level as part of the Ayrshire Team. Adam was also part of the first Ayrshire Squad to win an Anglo Scottish Event, defeating the major squads of Lothian, Yorkshire and Lanarkshire in the process.
The two players decided to make badminton their careers and moved to the Glasgow School of Sport to specialise with some of the top coaches in the country. During this period, both represented Scotland at the junior level, both adding numerous major national titles to their CVs. Adam and Holly graduated to playing against the best players from Europe and beyond.
To date, Adam has won an incredible 29 national titles, including a title for every age group – from under-11 through to under-21. He has additionally won international titles in Wales, Iceland and Poland, and earlier this season marginally lost in the televised final of the Scottish International Open Gents Double Event. He can also regularly be seen on TV in the National Badminton League.
Holly has won nine national titles and numerous major regional events. She too has competed on the international circuit, and during her first representative honour at the under-15 level she won both girls singles and mixed doubles events while representing Scotland.
Both Adam and Holly are now full international players and their amazing success shows no signs of diminishing. Within the last month, Adam reached the final of the Senior Men’s Doubles Open in Poland, while Holly will be competing in the European Under-19 Championships in Mulhouse, France in mid-April.
It speaks volumes that, despite busy training schedules and commitments, the players found time to go back to their roots to attend training sessions at Mauchline Games Hall. We would like to thank Adam and Holly for supporting out badminton programme and wish them continued success in their careers.
