East Ayrshire boasts a wide range of museum and gallery venues, in locations from Kilmarnock in the north (Dean Castle and the Dick Institute), Mauchline (Burns House Museum), Cumnock (The Baird Institute)and Dalmellington in the south (Doon Valley Museum). Each has its own unique character and history. In addition, the National Burns Memorial in Mauchline, and several smaller museum displays in local libraries and town halls throughout the area, enhance the facilities and collections on offer.
Our museums exist not only to collect and preserve objects for future generations, but to make these accessible to all. With a variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions, events and educational activities the museums often lie at the centre of their local communities, as well as being enjoyable and exciting destination for visitors.
Other resources such as www.futuremuseum.co.uk, our ‘virtual museum’, or educational loan kits, mean that even if you can’t visit the venues in person you can still explore what we have to offer.
