Track and Field Season Kicks Off at AAA

The Ayrshire Athletics Arena hosted the West Districts Championships in partnership with scottishathletics last weekend, on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th May.

More than 2000 athletes took part in the District Championships at three venues in Kilmarnock, Grangemouth, and Inverness.

The West District Championships marked the opening of the track and field season for many athletes and, despite the wet weather, there were some great performances at the AAA.

On Friday night, Ayrshire hammer thrower Rachel Hunter, who trains regularly at the AAA, won gold with an outstanding throw of 63.67m. It was a tremendous effort on a circle Rachel knows well from a number of years of training and competition.

A record number of athletes from the Kilmarnock Harriers AAC competed in the event, putting in excellent performances on Saturday in the under-15s 800m, girls’ javelin, and men’s and girls’ pole vault.
