Dean Castle: Outlander’s Beaufort Castle

Have you been caught up in the mystical and spell-binding Outlander series, wishing to be swept away to Claire and Jamie's world? Come and experience the land that inspired the novel and TV series in East Ayrshire.

Scenically set in a wooded glen in Kilmarnock, Dean Castle is featured in season 2 of Outlander as Beaufort Castle, seat of Clan Fraser of Lovat. The series follows the life of Claire, a nurse visiting Inverness on her honeymoon, as she’s thrown into the past to the time of the Jacobite uprisings where she meets Jamie, the leader of a band of Scottish rebels. Despite her guilt of knowing her husband is searching for her back in 1945, Claire is drawn to Jamie. The pair visit the castle to persuade Jamie’s grandfather, Lord Lovat ‘The Old Fox,’ to send his men to aid Charles Stuart.

Dean Castle, originally called Kilmarnock Castle, is located in Dean Castle Country Park. It was once the stronghold of the Boyd family; the castle and surrounding lands were given to Sir Robert Boyd by Robert the Bruce in 1316 to thank him for his support at the Battle of Bannockburn.

Dean Castle reopens in the Spring of 2023.
