Malky McCormick Recycling Event

With Dean Castle Textile Team. The Dick Institute's Event Space
East Ayrshire Leisure Trust will be hosting a recycling event in collaboration with Dean Castle Textile Team in the Dick Institute Event Space. Head along to learn a variety of sewing techniques from textile experts and upcycle old materials into brand-new beautiful creations. There will be lots of activities for the whole family, all themed around the 'make do and mend' ethos. This event is inspired by Peggy McMaster, the Waterside dressmaker who created cartoonist Malky McCormick's iconic hand-towel suit.

In 1997, to celebrate Kilmarnock FC's iconic Scottish Cup Final win, Malky McCormick has a blue and white suit made to wear to the match. He was in search of the perfect blue when one day, he walked into a local hotel and noticed the hand towels in their bathrooms. Malky had found the perfect colour! He tasked local dressmaker Peggy McMaster to help him create his Killie inspired outfit using only recycled hand towels. The suit has become synonymous with the artist and a special part of his fascinating story.

We encourage people attending the event to bring along their old, damaged clothes in order to give them a new lease of life!  Open to all ages. Activities for all ages. Free
