Lochgoin Covenanters Trail Official Opening

Official Opening of the Covenanting Trail: A Walk Through History - All Welcome

East Ayrshire Leisure invite members of the public attend the official opening of the new Covenanting Trail, On Saturday 19 July 2025 - a 7.74-mile (12.46 km) walking route that traces the footsteps of Scotland’s Covenanting past. The event will begin at 11am at Lochgoin Museum, a site of deep historical significance dedicated to the memory of the Covenanting cause in Ayrshire and beyond.

Following a short opening ceremony, participants will embark on a reflective pilgrimage to Fenwick Parish Church.  Along the way, there will be moments of reflection at key points on the route, with Rev. Kim, Minister of Fenwick Church, offering walkers the opportunity to pause and consider the sacrifices made by those who stood firm in their faith during one of the most turbulent periods in Scottish history.

The route covers a total distance of 12.46 km (7.74 miles), with an elevation ranging from 123 metres to 280 metres and a total ascent of 221 metres. While participants are encouraged to walk the full route, there will be opportunities to join the walk at various points, including Waterside and Fenwick, with timings for these stops to be confirmed in advance.

The walk is expected to conclude at Fenwick Parish Church at approximately 2.30pm - 3pm, where refreshments will be provided and the community will have the chance to gather in fellowship.

In addition to the walk, a Conventicle Service will be held on Sunday at 3pm on Sunday 20 July  at Fenwick Parish Church. This service will commemorate the spirit of the secret outdoor worship gatherings once held by the Covenanters and will serve as a fitting conclusion to the weekend’s events.

This opening event offers a unique opportunity to engage with Scotland’s rich religious heritage, honour the memory of the idealists of the Covenanting era, and enjoy the beautiful Ayrshire landscape. All are welcome to attend and take part in this journey through history.
