Snippets of Home

Snippets of Home is an exhibition of work made by young people in response to themes of home, conflict, displacement and belonging. It is the result of a workshop series facilitated by Never Such Innocence (NSI) and in partnership between East Ayrshire Leisure, the University of St Andrews, artist Diana Forster, and funded by Imperial War Museum.

Through a series of exhibition visits and workshops, students from Loudoun Academy, Stewarton Academy, South Ayrshire schools and members of ‘ArtClub?’ were asked to engage with concepts surrounding Diana Forster’s exhibition, Somewhere to Stay, which tells the story of Forster’s mother’s forced displacement from her home in Eastern Poland during the Second World War and the long journey that followed.

In the workshops, participants explored their own concepts of home, and the experiences of those affected by war and migration. They engaged in papercutting art sessions inspired by the traditional Polish craft, wycinanki, creating intricate designs that reflect their thoughts on home and displacement. They also took part in poetry workshops, using words to express their feelings about conflict, journeys and belonging.

We warmly invite you to come to see Snippets of Home on display in the Young Person’s Gallery at the Dick Institute from Saturday the 1st March until the 21st June.

Somewhere to Stay was commissioned by the Visualising War and Peace Project, as part of their wider exploration of war and its impacts. Visit our project website to find out more.
