Another Inspiring Story from Doon Valley Leisure Centre
My name is Stewart Haining I am 37 and live in Dalmellington. I have always struggled with my weight, but after the death of my mother my weight spiralled out of control and so did my depression. I found comfort in playing my XBox and very rarely ventured out the house or socialised with people. I had become dependent on food to overcome my depression.
I started at Doon Valley Leisure Centre in March 2017 doing some swimming. I enjoyed the fact I was getting out the house and communicating with people. I didn’t have the confidence or the ability at that time to attend the gym or the fitness classes that were on offer. After speaking to Billy he encouraged me to attend some 1 to 1 sessions with him as the classes would have been too much for me to undertake due to my size. I loved the atmosphere within the gym, everyone was so friendly and welcoming and I found I started to want to attend more regularly.
The one activity that gripped me from the start was Boxercise, it gave me a rush and a feeling of excitement, without this I feel I may have given up and it certainly was the main contributor to my weight loss.
Not long after I started my weight loss I was advised by my doctor that I had diabetes which could be controlled by exercise and diet. This really upset me at the time because I knew if I continued the way I was I would end up killing myself. I followed a strict diet and exercise plan and now I am pleased to say I have the diabetes under control and my sugar levels are now acceptable.
Throughout the whole experience at DVLC I met some fantastic people who have helped me along the way. I could not have got to where I am just now without the help of Billy who has been beside me pushing me every step of the way. He gave me the motivation and drive I needed to succeed. I have also met a lot of people I now class as good friends. I use the centre daily and I am finding I now have the confidence to help others. I attend all classes run by DVLC as I am now fit enough to do so.
Now nearly 2 years after I have started this journey I am 5st 8lbs lighter and I have a new lease of life. I see the benefit of exercise and healthy eating and it has changed my life for the better. I look in the mirror now and I am not ashamed at the person looking back at me. I hope my story will inspire others to use DVLC which is staffed by a great bunch of people and I want to thank everyone who has helped me along the way, even if it was just a conversation in the gym you don’t know exactly how much that helped at a time I needed it the most.
Our thanks go to Stewart for sharing his story. Congratulations to him on his weight loss and for taking control of his health. Congratulations are also due to our instructor Billy who goes all out to help new gym users to build confidence, to feel at home in the gym and to exceed their goals.
